Pre-K through Kindergarten

Our early learners program lets young children be children - free to explore, play and imagine. Designed to lead students from wonder to discovery, our program helps them associate learning with pleasure and fulfillment. Focus is on the process rather than the product. Hands-on projects introduce activities and materials to help children acquire sensory, motor, perceptual and language skills. The curriculum, within an age-appropriate framework, is adaptable to children's varying needs and interests.

The goal of the St. Pius X kindergarten program is to create the foundation for a lifelong love of learning while providing a nurturing and safe environment. Our children grow academically, spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically over the course of this important year. Our curriculum focuses on: literacy and math skills, early technology skills, social studies and science concepts, problem-solving skills, and character education within the framework of Catholic/Christian values.

Our program begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:05 p.m. (with early drop off at 7:45 a.m. and after school available each day until
6:00 p.m.). We offer three sections of kindergarten, each staffed with a certified kindergarten teacher and a full-time teaching assistant. Our kindergarten team works closely with families to support each child’s development. Our kindergarten program is engaging, fun
and motivating.

Language arts lessons enable students to develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through the framework of the Daily 5. Our children spend time each day working on decoding and comprehension skills, as well as reading independently or with a partner, writing independently, listening to reading, and engaging in word work (high-frequency sight word activities). Our curriculum utilizes a balance of fiction and informational texts. Kindergartners become confident members of a reading and writing community.

Mathematics lessons are designed to create effective problem solvers. Our children learn about numbers, counting to 100, adding, subtracting, measuring, shapes, graphs, time, and money.

Science units teach children about living and nonliving things; the five senses; plants and animals and their life cycles; weather and the seasons; caring for our planet; and continents and oceans.

Social studies concepts include the rights and responsibilities of belonging to a family, school, and faith community; our country and its holidays and symbols; and map and globe knowledge.

Technology is integrated into all parts of the curriculum. Students attend regular classes in our computer labs and make use of age-appropriate Internet content to reinforce their skills in all curriculum areas, including reading, writing, math and social studies.

Religion teaches our children about: God, Jesus, and the Holy Family, saints and their feast days, and church seasons and celebrations. We pray together every day, attend Adoration on Fridays, and attend all school Masses.

Our kindergartners have special classes in Technology, Spanish, Music, Art, Physical Education,
and Library.

An Early Start

In today’s world, young learners need to be prepared for the challenges of primary school. At St. Pius X, we provide kindergartners opportunities that foster their love of learning and lay the foundation for them to master reading, writing, math, and more.
