Physical Education

pe-w690-w690 The primary physical education curriculum introduces each child to basic movement concepts and activities. Group success is accomplished through activities that will ultimately teach team concepts. Grades three through eight are introduced to more team activities in sports, such as soccer, volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. Laps are run as part of every class. Good sportsmanship is emphasized at all grade levels and fostering healthy competition, rather than winning, is a priority.

Library

The library media program works to promote a love of reading while empowering students to be effective users of ideas and information in all formats in their learning environment. The program assists students as they grow to be independent, efficient, responsible and creative users of information and acts as a support to the teachers and their curriculum.

Music

music with guitars w690-w690 The music program for Pre-K through eighth grade is a coherent and sequential progression through which each student will master all concepts and skills needed to attain an understanding of music, which meets or exceeds both the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and the suggested curriculum of the Diocese of Albany. They study each aspect of music with lessons growing in complexity as the children progress. Music of many different world cultures is explored, and students are exposed to a wide variety of vocal and instrumental music at all grade levels. Students perform in our annual Christmas and Spring Concerts.

Art

art 1 Following the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts, the children learn the interrelatedness of art history, art criticism, aesthetics and art production. The children directly experience the creation of art by being introduced to a variety of visual art materials, techniques and processes. The children take trips to art galleries and museums, and have had visiting artists introduce them to the many careers in the art field.

Spanish

Students are instructed in Kindergarten through eighth grade by means of the audio-lingual approach. In addition to grammar and vocabulary, much emphasis is placed on the culture and history of Spain and Latin America. The elementary students are exposed to vocabulary with emphasis placed on pronunciation and phoneme recognition. In sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, textbook lessons are given more emphasis in addition to advanced Spanish dialogue. Many of our graduates go onto advanced Spanish course work in high school.
