Science

The science curriculum in grades one and two is based on life, physical and earth science. Topics covered include plant and animal life, magnetism, sound, heat, light, motion, force, weather, solar systems and health. These units are taught using varied materials and hands-on activities.

The third and fourth grade science curriculum consists of the areas of life science, physical science and earth science. Specific topics include changes in weather; changes caused by the relationship of earth, sun and moon, classification and measurement of matter, force and energy, electricity and magnetism, plant and animal life and their interaction. Observation, classification, prediction, measurement and inferential skills are developed.

The fifth and sixth grade science curriculum includes life science, chemistry, physical science and earth science. The fifth grade students participate in hands-on experiments throughout the year. The sixth grade students participate in an annual science fair and complete lab experiments throughout the year in the science lab center.

The seventh and eighth grade science curriculum is based on national, state, and diocesan standards. Seventh grade students study biology and human anatomy. Eighth grade students study physics and chemistry. Selected eighth grade students are offered the opportunity to take the New York State Living Environment High School Science Course and Regents Exam. Students at both grade levels engage in laboratory experiments to foster their understanding of the material presented, and to reinforce the scientific method. In addition, each student is required to participate in the annual Science Fair by formulating and testing individual hypotheses.
