Mathematics
Grades One and Two
- Students use reasoning skills to analyze data, to gather evidence and to construct arguments.
- Problem solving is introduced. Manipulatives are used to collect data, organize tables, charts and graphs, identify patterns in sequence, estimate reasonable answers, and justify solutions.
- Topics at these grade levels are numbers, graphing, addition and subtraction patterns, concepts and facts, place value, patterns to 100, money, time, measurement, geometry and fractions.
Grades Three and Four
- Basic skills of addition and subtraction are reinforced.
- Multiplication, division, fractions and geometry are introduced, as well as decimals, through the use of counting money and making change.
- Emphasis on developing strategies to solve word problems.
Grades Five and Six
- The seven key mathematical concepts covered are mathematical reasoning, numbers and numerations, operations, measurement, uncertainty, patterns and modeling.
Grades Seven and Eight
- Key mathematical concepts in Algebra and Geometry are introduced, reinforced and expanded.
- Selected eighth grade students are offered the opportunity to take the New York State Integrated Algebra High School Math Course and Regents Exam.
