Language Arts

Grades One and Two
  • Writing, listening and speaking skills are stressed. Students write basic sentences and paragraphs with attention to structure, grammar, mechanics and syntax.

     

  • Spelling, vocabulary and high frequency words are incorporated in writing tasks. Students are introduced to the writing process.

     

  • Penmanship is taught with attention to the proper manuscript formation of upper and lowercase letters.

     

Grades Three and Four
  • Spelling, basic grammar concepts, mechanics, and sentence usage continue to be emphasized. The writing process is presented in a sequential manner from clustering of ideas to the final copy.

     

  • At the third grade level, gathering and organizing information for a research report is introduced.

     

Grades Five and Six
  • Emphasis is placed on English grammar, writing skills, spelling and vocabulary. Creative writing is developed.

     

  • The writing process is expanded, including discussion, pre-writing, drafting, peer reviewing, revision, editing, and publication.

     

  • Public speaking skills are nurtured through oral presentations and in-class author readings.

     

  • In sixth grade, class newsletters and a literary magazine are produced featuring students' work in poetry and prose.

     

Grades Seven and Eight
  • Emphasis continues to be on English grammar, writing skills, vocabulary, and spelling.

     

  • Grammar is evaluated and examined through student and book examples and peer/teacher editing. Writing prompts are used to develop creative, descriptive, and persuasive writing.

     

  • Researching skills and writing reports are done at this level. This process encourages cross-curriculum advantages through the use of history, science, and technology.

     

  • Vocabulary and spelling are evaluated on a weekly basis.
